    My heart racing, I stepped up to the podium in Cowell Hall. It was my first semester on the debate team, my first semester at USF, and my coach had asked me to do a completely extemporaneous speech in front of the rest of the rest of the team. My first instinct was to get as far away as possible from this space. Instead, I had team members come up to me and help me prepare in my 30 minute prep, and gave me the best advice for managing nerves.

    An estimated three million Californians are at risk of losing their health insurance as residents will have their Medi-Cal eligibility reconsidered in the coming months, according to ABC7. As of June, approximately 225,000 Medi-Cal recipients have already lost their coverage after reconsideration, according to the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).

    Last Saturday, Civic Center Plaza was engulfed with red, green, and white hues as more than 2,000 protesters honored fallen Iranian political prisoners and called for a regime change in the country. Notable among these activists were members of USF’s Iranian Student Union (ISU) who utilized social media to promote the event and orchestrate pre-protest preparations throughout the week. Saturday’s protest was organized by BayArea4Iran, a grassroots activist group.

    The Maui wildfires are the fifth deadliest in U.S. history, with a current death toll of 115 people, not including the hundreds who are still missing. Families all over Maui and Hawaii at large are facing the worst possible outcome: losing their homes and the lives they’ve built over decades. News media has a choice on what they share with the world about the wildfires. Unfortunately, the wrong choice has been made.

    Last week, students donned head-to-toe denim outfits in support of sexual assault awareness month (SAAM). Resources, Education, Prevention, and Support (REPS) hosted the event at Privett Plaza as a culmination of their work to promote awareness throughout the month and to  “emphasize the support and respect and the care as a community that we want to see for survivors,” said fourth-year psychology student and USF REPSintern Stephen Gould.
