On Sept. 30 California became the second state after Maryland to prohibit private universities from giving special consideration to applicants who are related to alumni and donors, also known as “legacies.” This is a step in the right direction, legacy admissions are ultimately a discriminatory and ineffective predictor of a student’s ability to succeed in college. Eliminating this practice is crucial to addressing inequity in the higher education system.

Hardly a patch of grass could be seen among all the blankets sprawled out at Golden Gate Park this weekend, as attendees of the 24th Annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival basked and danced in the sun. The three day event, which took place on some of the hottest days San Francisco has seen all year, drew an estimated 750,000 and featured free performances from over 70 artists, including Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle.

President Paul Fitzgerald, S.J.’s decade-long chapter on the Hilltop has come to a close. The USF Board of Trustees announced his resignation via email on Sept. 23. President Fitzgerald said, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve as USF’s 28th President. I am very proud of all that we – faculty, librarians, staff, administrators, students, and alumni – have accomplished together” in a statement to the Board of Trustees, according to the email.

The Foghorn saw a period of computers and commentary in the late 1980s under the leadership of John Shanley, who served as editor-in-chief from 1988 to 1989. According to Shanley, 1988 was the first year the Foghorn went desktop, using Apple Macintosh to layout the paper on a computer as opposed to their previous practice, which involved using an exacto-knife on boards. “The first issue, especially, was very crazy and chaotic, because we had never done it that way before,” Shanley said.

Guided by the glow of red, paper lanterns hanging above Grant Avenue and the smells of barbeque pork buns and pastries, thousands gathered between Pine and Sacramento Streets this weekend for Chinatown’s night market. The two-day market took place on Nov. 10 and 11, from 5-9 p.m. each night ahead of the , which occurred at City Hall on Nov. 11. Pre-made dishes were sold by 25 different local vendors. According to the San Francisco Standard, 99% of the vendors were local Chinatown restaurants.
