Day 2 of NFL free agency came and went without the New York Jets making a peep. Now that we are comfortably into the second wave of free agency, it is time for New York to begin focusing on bargain buys. That was always going to be the Jets’ goal in this year’s free agency period, anyway. While the Jets do not lack cap space, they are not exactly flush with it, either, at least relative to the plethora of holes that must be filled on a roster that won five games last year.

Was Justin Fields a good signing for the New York Jets? Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania already analyzed the pros and cons of Fields’ game from a statistical angle. One of the most worrisome points he made was that Fields wasn’t as careful with the ball as his low turnover number in 2024 would suggest, and he also lost most of his big-play ability, both on the ground and through the air. Before the 2024 season, Davante Adams’ trade to the New York Jets seemed all but inevitable. But it should not have been. The whole idea of this Jets season was supposed to be to compete for a championship. It was one last go-for-broke attempt. That’s why ex-general manager Joe Douglas deferred so much cap money to the future and signed veterans with injury concerns but high upside to incentive-laden deals. Trading for Adams would have fit into that vision.

With only seven days remaining until the NFL’s legal tampering period window opens (March 10, 12 p.m. ET), piping-hot rumors are beginning to dominate the news cycle. The New York Jets are already being linked to multiple free agents on the offensive side of the football. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, two free agent wide receivers have generated buzz as potential targets for New York: Josh Palmer of the Los Angeles Chargers and Tim Patrick of the Detroit Lions.
