It's difficult to imagine a place and a vibe that could be further from 'country style' than New York City. Maybe Tokyo? Regardless, it was the Big Apple that I chose as my holiday destination in April this year. I first visited in 1999 and instantly fell in love with New York – mostly because of the city's go-go-go energy. After my children were born, it was the one place I wanted us to visit together, and finally at 16 and 18, my girls had reached the perfect ages.

Pulling up out the front, you can tell a lot about your accommodation from the outside, as first impressions do count – and the River Haus in Morpeth, NSW, does not disappoint.
