Multiferroic materials consisting of multiple and mutually coupled order parameters including polarization can have an intriguing response to applied electric field, and give rise to the so-called cross-caloric effect, as the nondipolar degrees of freedom can contribute to the electrocaloric effect (ECE) via cross couplings to the electric dipoles.

AbstractControlling the direction of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism by an electric field in single-phase multiferroics will open the door to the next generation of devices for spintronics and electronics. The typical magnetoelectric coupling such as the linear magnetoelectric effect is very weak in type-I multiferroics and therefore the magnetoelectric switching is rarely achieved.
