    WOODBURY — The town of Woodbury is set to receive $2 million in federal disaster relief to repair a dam that was badly damaged by severe flash flooding that hit eastern Orange County in the summer of 2023. The Earl Reservoir Dam, built in 1912, has been classified by the state Department of Environmental Conservation as a “high hazard,” meaning if it fails, it could cause widespread damage to roads, homes, commercial buildings, utilities and the overall environment.

    NEWBURGH — Newburgh residents can once again swim in their city pool. Newburgh celebrated the unofficial start to summer over Memorial Day weekend by reopening its new and improved pool and splash pad at the Delano Hitch-Aquatic Center on Washington Street. The center underwent an extensive $15.5 million renovation paid for through a combination of federal American Rescue Plan Act funding and an $8 million grant from the state’s NY SWIMS program.

    MILLBROOK — Lucy Johnson and Margaret Cornell may seem like an unlikely pair. Johnson, 81, hails from the Hudson Valley. An archaeological anthropologist, she taught at Vassar College for 41 years before retiring in 2014. Cornell, 86, was born in Kentucky and went to high school in rural Georgia. She later enrolled in a seminary school, where she met her late husband, and then Simmons College, where she studied archival management.

    CHESTER — An Orange County grand jury has indicted John Reilly III, Chester’s 48-year-old highway superintendent, with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a lost DoorDash delivery driver on the night of May 2 as the driver left Reilly’s property. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment Monday afternoon.
