    A little boy is standing on a wooden box, peering through a submarine periscope. But, this periscope isn’t in a sub. It’s in a museum at Santa Barbara Harbor. "I see the harbor, I see flags, and I see palm trees," said the little boy. The periscope gives him a view of the harbor area. We’re at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, an eight thousand square foot complex which celebrates the region’s maritime history.

    The just-released 2024 crop report for Ventura County shows it was a major year of growth, despite the impacts of a heat wave and a wildfire. The annual Ventura County Agricultural Report shows the total crop value hit $2.31 billion, up 7% from 2023. Strawberries remained the county’s top crop, with a total valuation of $708 million, down 3% from 2023. Strawberries have been the county’s number one crop for 25 years in a row now. Avocados powered their way into the number two slot, at $338 million.

    If you’d like to do something to improve the environment in the Tri-Counties, your chance is coming this weekend. The Surfrider Foundation Ventura County and the City of Port Hueneme are launch a volunteer-drive project to restore the natural habitat of more than two acres of coastal dunes. The project will take place in Hueneme Beach Park. The plan is to remove invasive plants, and to plant seeds for native dune vegetation.

    A new Santa Barbara County Grand Jury report said there have been some preventable medical-related deaths in the county’s jail system. The Grand Jury investigated three medically related deaths. It says in one case, a 41-year-old woman used a telephone cord in a cell to take her life. The report says jail medical personnel didn’t know she had a history of mental health issues. In a second case, a 57-year-old woman died as a result of a perforated gastric ulcer.

    It was a day that changed Santa Barbara forever. But out of the tragedy and destruction came the architectural look of the city we know today. On June 29, 1925, the city was rocked by a massive earthquake. "The earthquake happened between 6:42 and 6:43 a.m. Exactly when, we'll never get that debate finished. It was estimated at 6.3 on the Richter Scale," said historian Neal Graffy. He said the quake left 11 people dead, and the core of the city in ruins. "Downtown Santa Barbara was destroyed.
