INTRODUCTION The better knowledge and understanding of pulpal defence mechanisms, as well as the improvement in bioactive materials, have led to the development of a panel of strategies aiming to preserve tooth structure and pulp vitality as much as possible, especially in the case of deep caries lesions (DCL) with or without pulp exposure, which is part of what is known as vital pulp treatments (VPTs).
