    White Oak Golden Kiwanis Club of Newnan members visited City of Hope Atlanta in Newnan on Thursday for a presentation about what the cancer center has meant to the county. Jonathan Watkins, president of the cancer center, spoke about the financial as well as quality-of-life benefits the City of Hope brought to the community. City of Hope has a patient satisfaction ranking among the top five hospitals in the country, Watkins said.

    The Newnan City Council on Tuesday approved a rezoning request for 8.3 acres on Newnan Crossing Boulevard East for the purpose of building 33 townhomes. The property was rezoned low density office and institutional in 2008 but is currently undeveloped. It is bordered by residential developments including Stonebridge and Woodbury Estates, said Dean Smith, senior planner for the city. “As it sits now, it is currently wooded and vacant,” Smith said.

    After hearing the history of the Newnan Urban Redevelopment Agency during their retreat in March, city council members expressed concern at the sheer size of the problem of blight. “I’d like to see one day, this neighborhood, no longer be blighted,” said Councilmember Jim Thomasson of Chalk Level. “That’s my goal.”He felt like the city needed to be more focused on its redevelopment. “I feel like we’re just taking our paintbrush and we’re just doing this randomly,” Thomasson said.
