This week I got a letter from a friend describing his martini and tacitly admonished me for adding water to my straight-from-the-freezer gin, as if it were somehow unmanly to do so. I was inordinately annoyed—inordinately because, really, who cares? To each his own. But it got me thinking about why the Martini inspires so much emotion. What would seem an innocuous combination of gin and vermouth has inspired countless books on the subject, essays, even poems.

After interviewed me about writing and cookbooks for her newsletter (see below), I got to wondering (again, and always) what makes a cookbook valuable? And more important, what is the place of cookbooks in an age of free recipes for just about anything right there on your phone? First and foremost, books offer story and the unique voice of the writer. They also offer, in most cases, tested recipes that work.

Two unique events have coincided: the 100th Anniversary of the Caesar Salad and an email from our friend and neighbor Tripp Evans, apologizing for ordering the chicken Caesar salad at a Newport, RI, restaurant. Read Melissa Kirsch’s attempts to recreate her deli-bought Caesar.

I charge my phone in the bedroom, but I have good “sleep hygiene,” so I silence it and do not look at its screen, even if I have insomnia. If I have trouble sleeping, I put a super-talky show or an audiobook on my tablet, turn my back to its screen and just let the words wash over me. OK, so maybe I don’t have good sleep hygiene.

We asked Laura Lippman for her favorite book of the year, and this is what she suggests to readers. I had a decent reading year in 2023. My focus was affected by the pandemic—I still have the ability to concentrate fiercely, it's just in smaller supply, and my writing often sucks it all up. So I read more slowly than I used to. With all those caveats aside, I'd like to spotlight Claire Dederer's Monsters for my favorite book published in 2023 by someone who is not a close friend.

Back in our West Village studio, after weeks of uncommonly fine travel, we organized a game night with a few of Ann’s former students (uniformly adored) and one gaming spouse, for a night of dinner and Code Names (if you’ve never played, we highly recommend). Normally, this is a fun decision—what to cook for people? But this night came with an email titled “Allergies for our Code Name crew”:- Me: Soy and citrus (I can bring coconut aminos or non-soy teriyaki/fish sauce/etc.
