    A THUNDERSTORM WARNING is in effect for five counties as the weather becomes less settled this week. Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Laois, and Offaly. These areas are likely to experience some scattered thunderstorms this afternoon, with possible impacts including lightning and spot flooding. The warning is valid until 8pm this evening. Overall, the forecast for the country today is one of “a mix of cloudy periods and sunny spells”.

    A MOTORCYCLIST HAS been airlifted to hospital after a crash on a rural road in Cavan yesterday evening. Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident on the R194 in Virginia, Cavan. In a statement, gardaí said: “The collision involving a car and a motorcycle occurred at approximately 6.40pm on the outskirts of Virginia.”The motorcyclist, who is in his 50s, is in critical condition in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

    Here’s all the news to know as you start your day. Public trust Ireland’s election process is high but work is needed to improve knowledge of the voting process, according to a new study. The Electoral Commission (An Coimisiún Toghcháin) today published the results of the 2024 National Election and Democracy Study. 94% of respondents agree that elections in Ireland are “conducted in accordance with the law”, while 88% agree that elections are “well managed and that election officials are fair”.

    A PILOT SCHEME aimed at better equipping schools to analyse and respond to students’ attendance rates is going to be rolled out in 60 schools around the country. It comes as part of a number of measures the government is implementing to try to tackle school absenteeism. Schools have reported a decline in regular attendance in recent years and a rise in the number of pupils missing a concerning number of days. Minister for Education Helen McEntee has said she is “determined” to tackle the issue.

    THREE MEN HAVE been arrested after an aggravated burglary of a home in Louth on Saturday evening. Gardaí in Dundalk were alerted to the burglary in progress at a residence in Carlingford at around 6.45pm on Saturday. Three men had entered the home of an elderly woman, assaulted her, and stole a sum of money. They left the scene but gardaí arrested the three men, all aged in their 30s, nearby. The woman, who was injured, was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.
