FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Preliminary data shows a "record surge" of challenges to books in public libraries across the country for the first eight months of 2023, the American Library Association (ALA) reported. A challenge to a book could result in the novel being "retained, restricted, or revoked at a school or public library."The ALA recorded a 20% increase in challenges to books between Jan. 1 and Aug. 2023 compared to the same time period in 2022.

After a contentious special meeting on Thursday, Llano County Judge Ron Cunningham announced that the county's library system will stay open. “The library will remain open. We will try this in the courts — not through social media or through news media,” Cunningham said. Commissioners considered whether or not they would shut down their library system rather than complying with a federal judge’s order that they must return 17 banned books to the library shelves.
