    Ground has broke on a new affordable housing development in the northwest Calgary community of Mount Pleasant. The 16-home mixed-income development will be built on the site of the former St. Joseph School and is expected to serve up to 45 residents. Construction is scheduled to be finished next summer, and residents should be able to move it shortly after.

    An inadequate HVAC system combined with parkade cleaning prompted the evacuation of a northwest Calgary apartment building due to carbon monoxide Wednesday evening, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says. Firefighters were called to the area of 2 Avenue and 19 Street NW in West Hillhurst just before 6 p.m. Crews detected carbon monoxide levels as high as 100 parts per million within the building. Sixty people were evacuated as a result.

    Two alleged drug dealers in Medicine Hat are facing several charges after police seized more than one kilogram of cocaine. Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) made the arrests and seizures on Tuesday with help from the Medicine Hat Police Service and Redcliff RCMP. The drugs seized have an estimated street value of $125,000. Two homes in Medicine Hat were searched following a planned traffic stop in Redcliff.

    By Lauryn Heintz A child was left with minor injuries after being hit by a vehicle in Calgary's northeast Thursday morning. Calgary police say it happened around 8:48 a.m. at the intersection of Templehill Drive NE and Temple Drive NE, just blocks from St. Thomas More School. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene.

    Starting Thursday, Alberta teachers will cast their votes on whether or not to proceed with a strike. Voting will continue until June 8. If the strike vote is approved, it will be good for 120 days. A 72-hour notice would have to be issued before educators could hit the picket lines. This comes after teachers voted 99 per cent in favour of job action last week.
