    Calgary city council's first meeting of the year is sure to be a busy one, and money is likely to top the agenda. Tuesday's meeting will see Couns. Sonya Sharp, Andre Chabot, Terry Wong, Dan McLean, and Mayor Jyoti Gondek propose motions to implement a pay freeze for themselves and their colleagues. Last week, the group of councillors issued a statement declaring their intention to propose a motion that would freeze council compensation at 2024 rates until 2030.

    Calgary's mayor and city council are starting 2025 with a boost to their paychecks for the fourth year in a row. The raise amounts to just over three per cent, bringing the salary for the city's 14 councillors to $124, 462.60 per year and the salary for Mayor Jyoti Gondek to $220, 298.83. Prior to several consecutive raises, council's pay was frozen in 2019, 2020, and 2021, and cut in 2018.

    Calgarians continue to fight back against blanket rezoning as the case returns to court Wednesday. A judge is expected to rule on the merits of blanket rezoning, the decision not to hold a plebiscite, and whether or not the policy should be reversed. There are hundreds of people involved in the court challenge, which had its first court hearing in October. A GoFundMe raising money for the cause has raised nearly $150,000.

    City council will debate Tuesday whether or not to ask the province to close the supervised drug consumption site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, and some Calgarians are planning to gather in opposition. Coun. Dan McLean has put forward a Notice of Motion asking council advocate to the Alberta government for the closure of the site. He cites the province's move to the Alberta Recovery Model, which adopts a so-called recovery-oriented approach, as justification for his decision.

    In the wake of the news that Red Deer's supervised consumption site will close by spring, questions are swirling about the future of a similar facility in Calgary's downtown core. Opening its doors in October 2017, the Safeworks Supervised Consumption Site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, provides a place where people who use drugs are monitored in a hygenic environment to reduce the harm of substance use.
