Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has boosted campus security following an assault that left a student seriously injured this week. A Cal Poly spokesperson said campus police have increased patrols around dorm areas in the wake of the attack, with both officers and Mustang Patrol volunteers. The assault on the unidentified male student occurred early Sunday morning as he walked between two campus dorms.

The City of SLO and the Chamber of Commerce are once again trying to give area businesses a boost by bringing back their Buy Local Bonus program this year. The holiday season is a make or break time of year for many retailers, who say they appreciate the help. This is the fifth year in a row that the city and the Chamber of Commerce are joining forces on the Bonus program.

The Performing Arts Center has opened its doors to the Cal Poly community for concerts, theater productions and recently, Election Day. On Nov. 5, the PAC served as one of San Luis Obispo’s official polling stations, where students were able to cast their ballots without leaving campus. Heather Gray is the administration and special projects coordinator for the PAC. She says this opportunity was just another way to support the student body. “We have a lot of first-time voters,” Gray said.

Major funding has been secured to improve rail infrastructure along the Central Coast. The state awarded Central Coast government and transit agencies over $63 million dollars in funding for rail improvements. Monies from the California State Transportation Agency will help pay for projects in San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

San Luis Obispo is offering a way to recycle your pumpkins the Friday after Halloween. The city will host their first ever Pumpkin Smash event to compost old Halloween pumpkins. Residents can toss carved pumpkins in the green bins at Emerson Park, which will then be converted into renewable energy and nutrient rich compost. Rachelle Paris is the Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator for the City of San Luis Obispo.
