It is 35 years since the École Polytechnique massacre in Montréal on December 6, 1989, when fourteen women engineering students were murdered, and another ten women and four men were injured. Violence against women continues to be scourge of society. December 6, 1989 is etched in the memories of many Canadians — the date of a horrific anti-feminist mass shooting.

    Last April 1st, the Alberta-based Western Standardran a story with the headline: “Federal budget commits funding to convert one lane of Trans-Canada Highway for bicycles.” The story continued to relate how the Liberal budget had set aside $100 billion to build bike lanes along the entire length of the Trans-Canada. Hard to believe, eh? For sure, but note the date of the story. It wasn’t a news article: it was an April Fools spoof.

    Canada’s rail network is shut down. The two companies, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, that control the country’s railroads locked out their 9,300 workers just after midnight on August 22. This follows months of an impasse in negotiations. The workers, members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, voted 99 percent for strike action. This overwhelming mandate shows their determination to fight for a strong contract and stand up to the big rail corporations.
