Nine days after the polls closed on Saturday, October 19, the outcome of BC’s election is becoming clearer. The BC Conservatives, which only four years ago got less than two percent of the vote and elected no one, with many candidates who had outlandish and bizarre views, nearly won. They were running against the NDP — a sensible, moderate party, which won nearly 50 percent of the votes four years ago. With two recounts planned, the NDP has the smallest number of seats for a majority, 47 districts.

It has been a long wait for public dental care and pharmacare. The Dental Benefit Act was passed in November 2022 and the Canada Pharmacare Act was introduced in February 2024. Unfortunately, both fall far short of what is needed “to facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers,” the promise of the 40-year-old Canada Health Act.

Just over a year ago, the NDP was in front of the United Conservative Party (UCP) in every opinion poll, with an average lead of over 10 percent. Yet on May 29, the UCP won a majority of the votes (52.6 percent), and seats in the poll that matters: Alberta’s election. In 2020 and 2021 the UCP was hated, and its factions were fighting each other. The then-leader Kenney had zig-zagged on public health policy throughout the most acute periods of the COVID pandemic.

While Alberta’s deeply divided election rolls on, the province is suffering from fire and smoke. A dry winter and a hot spring have left much of the province tinder dry. The fires, that started in early May, by May 21 have already burnt over 940,000 hectares of land. This is more than any year since at least 2005. Clearly climate change, driven by burning fossil fuels, is behind the grim destruction.

In early 2020, COVID engulfed Canadians and the world in turmoil that has not ended. War in the Ukraine, convoy in Ottawa, inflation everywhere, and fear of a banking crisis and another recession. In June 2022, inflation was above 8 percent, the highest rate in over 40 years. It has declined to 5 percent, but prices are still going up. Prices in grocery stores are increasing by more than 10 percent a year. Rents are soaring.

Students and teachers are struggling in BC with underfunded and understaffed schools. The public school system faces teacher shortages and increasing enrolment, but the provincial NDP government didn’t provide enough funding to address these shortfalls. This has led to widespread concerns that this year’s Vancouver School Board (VSB) budget will include cuts to programs and services, or even to school closures.
