Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has said it has been forced to cut staff and its opening hours as soaring costs make it a struggle to make ends meet. The charity, which has been open since 1884, has seen rising energy bills and increased employment costs, among other pressures, like many other charitable organisations.

As some of Scotland’s biggest universities look to cut back spending and reduce staffing levels, unions and higher education bodies say the sector is in financial crisis. Dundee University is looking to axe up to 700 staff, and unions at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen are to strike over cuts. All but one of the universities have seen a reduction in international students, and they say more funding from the Scottish Government is needed to make free tuition viable.

A campaigner from Edinburgh who was dubbed “Kira the machine” as she battled a rare childhood cancer called neuroblastoma has backed a proposal to invest more money into researching and treating lesser known forms of the disease. Kira Noble and her mum, Aud, say the bill proposed by MP Scott Arthur could be transformational for the experience of young people.

A film which follows the lifespan of a simple mug has been designed by pupils at Film Education Dunfermline. The Fife programme supports unemployed youngsters living with disabilities by giving them hands on experience with filmmaking. Fife Council hopes the initiative will help participants gain confidence to pursue careers in the film industry in the future.
