    A shooting occurred at Antioch High School — located just under 20 miles southeast of Vanderbilt’s campus — on Jan. 22 in which a 17-year-old gunman opened fire in the school’s cafeteria, killing himself and a 16-year-old girl while wounding another student. Members of both the Nashville and Vanderbilt communities expressed their grief for the students, teachers and families affected by the tragedy.

    Vanderbilt’s U.S. Elections class welcomed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander to Langford Auditorium on Nov 7, just two days after Election Day. McConnell is a Kentucky Senator who has held office since 1985, making him the longest-serving senator in Kentucky’s history. He was the majority leader from 2015 to 2021 and is currently serving as minority leader.

The class, listed as PSCI 1550, is administered once every four years in the fall semester during a U.S. presidential election and is currently taught by four of Vanderbilt’s professors of political science — Josh Clinton, John Geer, Nicole Hemmer and Jon Meacham.
