The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education approved a Tuesday to rebuild Marquez Charter Elementary School, Palisades Charter Elementary School and Palisades Charter High School by the end of 2028.

A 4-year-old girl with a life-threatening medical condition could be deported after the Trump administration canceled her legal status last month. The child came to the United States from Mexico with her family in 2023 seeking treatment for short bowel syndrome, a condition that prevents her from processing nutrients on her own. In 2021, the city of Los Angeles took some of its COVID-19 relief money and put it toward a big plan: expanding and running its own childcare centers. The City Council approved $20 million dollars of American Rescue Plan Act federal funds to renovate and reopen 10 licensed preschools at Recreation and Parks facilities. It highlighted a persistent problem that became all the more acute during the pandemic: There is not enough licensed childcare in Los Angeles.

The additions bring enrollment up from 70% to 82%. District representatives say one big reason for the boost is a recent that state preschools accept children even if they’re not potty-trained.
