Former Los Angeles city councilmember Nate Holden has died at the age of 95. A lifelong public servant, Holden represented South Los Angeles on the city council from 1987 to 2003. Before that, he served four years in the California State Senate. "Nate Holden leaves behind a legacy of service and strength," said Mayor Karen Bass in a statement. "Throughout his life, he put the South Los Angeles community front and center.

They were among the first Angelenos to send their kids to free childcare centers that the city of Los Angeles had renovated and reopened during the pandemic. They considered the new programs to be a huge success, and planned to send their younger children to the programs, too.

The city of Los Angeles says it will no longer have the money to run most childcare centers launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the city allocated federal relief dollars to renovate and reopen 10 licensed childcare centers for young kids in economically disadvantaged areas. Eight of those centers are open and running, including in Pacoima, Echo Park, Boyle Heights and Crenshaw. Two more have not yet opened, according to city officials.
