In the impoverished area of Bithlo, about 15 minutes from the Orange/Brevard County line, Ashley Reese was in the midst of something she’s become all too familiar with: gathering her belongings from one campsite and relocating to a new one. The 31-year-old lifelong Bithlo resident grew up between homes and has spent most of her adult life experiencing poverty and homelessness. “My family basically disowned me. I don’t know what I’d do if it weren’t for my husband,” she said.

In a special election Tuesday, Brevard County voters chose two Republican candidates to fill vacant seats in the Florida Legislature. Longtime Florida Republican lawmaker Debbie Mayfield will now serve as Florida District 19’s Senator. She takes the seat after Randy Fine, who resigned the position to run for Florida’s 6th Congressional District – a seat he won in April. Mayfield defeated Democrat Vance Ahrens with 54% of the vote.

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s latest quarterly report shows a rate increase, following record-low rate filings and even a decrease last year. The 2025 first quarter report revealed property insurance base rates ticked up slightly by 0.3%, meaning that of the 10 most recent reports, nine show rate hikes, making it about a 40% increase for Central Florida policyholders since 2022.

A group of nearly two dozen Volusia County households filed a lawsuit Wednesday against multiple real estate developers and managers, claiming that stormwater drainage mismanagement led to frequent and severe flooding in their neighborhoods. The civil action lists 23 addresses and 36 homeowners, all in the Miller Lake area of Orange City, who retained the legal services of Morgan & Morgan’s Business Trial Group.
