Seminole County joins a growing list of at least 22 Florida communities that have chosen to stop fluoridating drinking water since November, when State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo issued guidance against the long-recommended dental health practice. County commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to stop fluoridating water, with District 3 Commissioner Lee Constantine casting the only dissenting vote.

Applause broke out at Orange County Public Works this week when the county’s Development Review Committee voted 3-2 against a massive development proposal for the Shingle Creek wetlands area, which forms the headwaters of the Florida Everglades. The DRC’s vote Wednesday to recommend denying the proposal doesn’t stop the Tuscana planned development project in its tracks. The proposal will still go before the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission on April 24.

A proposed fuel terminal that previously prompted safety concerns from some Volusia County residents and elected officials may have found a new home in Flagler County, pending processes and approvals that would still need to come through before any development plans are finalized. Belvedere Terminals is eyeing a parcel of land zoned for industrial use in Palm Coast.

An Unusual Mortality Event from December 2020 to April 2022, when 1,255 manatees died along Florida’s Atlantic coast, is now officially over, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. UMEs are defined by the Marine Mammal Protection Act as “a stranding that is unexpected; involves a significant die-off of any marine mammal population; and demands immediate response,” according to the National Marine Fisheries Service.

New grant funding is on the way for projects to boost water quality and supply across the state, including $100 million for 25 projects to help the Indian River Lagoon, Governor Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday at a press conference in Palm Bay. In all, more than $389 million was awarded for water projects this grant cycle, including $55 million for alternative water supply projects, DeSantis said.
