An appeal filed by Bayside Village Marina on the construction of a new wastewater pump station was rejected by the state Coastal Commission on Thursday with commissioners finding no substantive reason to deny the coastal development permit application submitted by Orange County Sanitation District. The new project would replace the 4,800-square-foot pump station built in 1966 on East Coast Highway.

Lanes were temporarily shut down Friday morning on Jamboree Road at Ford Road after a car was engulfed in flames. Residents were notified at around 9:30 a.m. that the northbound lanes would be closed due to an electrical fire in a vehicle. The Newport Beach Police Department stated the fire appeared to have started at around 9 a.m. but no additional details were forthcoming. No injuries were reported, and lanes were reopened by around 11:30 a.m.

On what was a surprisingly overcast July afternoon in Newport Beach, children screamed and cheered as they vaulted across the sand and water at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina. It was an ordinary sight for most beaches this time of year, but this day was special. The kids at the shore Thursday were hosted by Miracles For Kids, a nonprofit focused on providing aid to families with critically ill children that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The Magnolia Tank Farm project in Huntington Beach took a step forward Wednesday after the state Coastal Commission approved a land use amendment — a year after talks on the contested development project stalled. “We are thrilled with the California Coastal Commission’s approval of our Huntington Beach project,” Shopoff Realty Investments chief executive Bill Shopoff said in a statement Thursday.
