The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has responded to the end of in-state tuition rates for DACA recipients. This summer, Amber Mora is continuing her education at UTRGV. She's one of the first in her family to go to college. Mora said she has a mixed status family and believes education has helped them plant roots in Texas. "At the end of the day, they're not here in a bad way. They're just here they want to get their education," Mora said.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law on Wednesday a bill providing $8.5 billion in new funding for Texas public schools. It’s the first increase in the state for public education funding in four years. In Rio Grande city, lots of 18-wheelers pass through, and some of them stay. “It's dangerous for the workers as well as for the community,” Rio Grande City resident Saudi Alanis said. Following complaints from community members, the city will soon start fining drivers who park tractor-trailers in their neighborhoods for long periods of time. “While the city understands somebody's trying to make a living, it creates a nuisance for the neighbors,” Rio Grande City City Manager Gilberto Millan said.

In a proactive effort to address mental health challenges within the community, the Mission Police Department held a Thursday mental health training, according to a news release. The training was part of a partnership with the UTRGV School of Medicine. Mission police officers — as well as law enforcement officers from other agencies such as the U.S. Border Patrol and the Brownsville Police Department — attended the PROSPER training.

inNews - LocalTrinity Episcopal Church in Pharr has been in the community for 100 years. Church leaders said on Thursday, they woke up broken stained-glass windows. It’s the fourth time in one month the church has been vandalized, church leaders said. “We have had windows broken in our parish hall, we have had other acts of vandalism that are too disgusting for the news,” Trinity Episcopal Church Priest in charge Sharon Alexander said.
