Freshman and Tenderfoot Radhika Dharmapurikar initially joined Boy Scouts of America (BSA) during eighth grade after constantly hearing her friends discuss the camping, community and friendships that were all essential to scouting. Dharmapurikar did not enjoy camping before she joined, but she was drawn to the community side of scouts as opposed to the campouts.

Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Ann Sobrato High School 60-44 during its fourth preseason game on Saturday, Dec. 30. MVHS maintained a strong lead, ending the first half 45-15. Though ASHS began to catch up, ending the third quarter 47-32, MVHS pulled through in the final quarter for the win. “In the second half, we stopped playing together,” Suresh said.

Since she was 8 years old, Sanika Kothari has loved cheerleading. She recalls bursting into tears every time a practice was canceled and she didn’t get to practice flying. However, when Kothari was 12 years old, she started All-Star cheerleading and was placed in the position of base for the first time. Now a senior and team captain, Kothari has continued as a base on MVHS’s Cheer Team. In cheer, there are three main positions within stunt groups: flyers, back spots and bases.

Junior Samuel Toruno recalls his first meeting with Dr. Gustavo Fabian Portela, the team doctor for the Colombian soccer team Deportivo Cali, as a stepping stone in his athletic career. Toruno is a goalkeeper for the Silicon Valley Soccer Academy MLS Next 2007 team and has been playing soccer for around ten years.

Varsity Girls Water Polo fell 10-5 to Homestead High School on Tuesday, Oct. 10. HHS led in the first quarter 2-0 but MVHS gained momentum in the second quarter, ending the first half leading with the record at 4-2. However, MVHS fell behind in the third and fourth quarters, ending the game with a score of 10-5. Sophomore and goalie Ria Sethi attributes the loss to lack of communication throughout the game, although the team maintained energy as the game went on.

The FUHSD Director of Administrative Services Jason Crutchfield grew up in an area consisting of small towns, with each town only having one high school. That means that every sports game was not just a competition between two high schools, but also the towns themselves. Crutchfield recalls how supportive the town’s community was toward his high school’s athletic program, noting that the town really only had high school sports teams — and a handful of college teams — that it could watch.

Varsity Boys Water Polo lost 11-4 against Homestead High School on Tuesday, Sept. 19. HHS led and ended the first quarter with a score of 3-0. However, in the second quarter, MVHS picked up the momentum, scoring one goal during the second quarter for a score of 5-1 by halftime. MVHS scored three more goals in the third and fourth quarter, but HHS maintained its lead, bringing the final score to 11-4.
