A nonprofit that pays for travel costs and other expenses for people seeking abortions is pushing its message across metro Atlanta and Georgia — and already seeing a spike in demand. Officials with The Brigid Alliance tell WABE’s “Morning Edition” they’re trying to reach patients who can’t seek care because of Georgia’s restrictive abortion law, which bans most abortions after six weeks into a pregnancy.

Days before she was supposed to take her final exams, Dalton State College student Ximena Arias-Cristobal was mistakenly pulled over by a city police officer. During that traffic stop, Dalton police discovered Arias-Cristobal was undocumented. She was brought to the U.S. with her family at only 4 years old. The 19-year-old was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to be held at the privately-run Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia.

Catholics across Atlanta are reacting to the first Sunday blessing from Pope Leo XIV, the first selected from the U.S.Roughly 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City to watch his address on Mother’s Day. Pope Leo told the crowd he was there to deliver a message of peace, and turned to the world’s leaders, chanting, “Never again war!”Pope Leo also called for lasting peace in Ukraine, humanitarian aid to be provided to the civilians in Gaza and a ceasefire.
