The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression ranked Pitt 208th out of 251 schools for free speech in their 2025 report on speech climates. Pitt’s ranking dropped compared to last year’s report, where Pitt ranked 130th out of 248 schools. FIRE surveyed undergraduates through College Pulse, using student perceptions and experiences to analyze the free speech climate on campus.

For me, rice is comfort. It’s a staple food in my house, made quick and easy. It only takes a pot, water, rice and oil — yes, I add olive oil to my rice, try it! — to create a cup of pure goodness. But sometimes, after 18 credits, a research seminar, work, volunteering and just existing as an adult, even making rice feels painstaking. That is when I take the bus down Forbes Avenue to Squirrel Hill, a neighboring area to our campus in Oakland.

Pitt is an urban campus, situated in the heart of the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. For some students, that is a major selling point. For Club Equestrian at Pitt, this poses a challenge for horseback riders. Its main barn, BarGee Farms, is located 30 minutes north of campus, but according to senior captain Peyton Chen, sometimes that commute varies. “It’s technically 30 minutes north,” Chen said.

Far and away, Pitt women’s volleyball’s biggest game of the season so far is this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center. The typical venue of Pitt basketball hosts a rivalry matchup of unbeaten Pitt and unbeaten Penn State. It’s as big as a volleyball match can get this early in the season. “I think we’re all going to be a little bit more juiced up for this kind of crowd,” Pitt head coach Dan Fisher said. “But there still is the perspective that it is September,” Fisher said.
