The cultural context of an electoral year in Puerto Rico with historical results and repeated activism, an artistic residency with tickets sold for only the residents of the island and a distinct folklore music album from the Bad Bunny, the King of Reggaeton, is not something I can explain in 5,000 characters in English.

For me, rice is comfort. It’s a staple food in my house, made quick and easy. It only takes a pot, water, rice and oil — yes, I add olive oil to my rice, try it! — to create a cup of pure goodness. But sometimes, after 18 credits, a research seminar, work, volunteering and just existing as an adult, even making rice feels painstaking. That is when I take the bus down Forbes Avenue to Squirrel Hill, a neighboring area to our campus in Oakland.

The worst part about finals is to see your life dwindle away in the small space of your room, finishing up essay after essay. After a while, the monotony doesn’t help you get work done. That is where the beauty of coffee shops comes in — a little treat and an adventure bundled up in one. As a coffee nerd, I’ve spent the past three years scouring the city for the best coffee shops that offer a good study space for me to bang on my keyboard and get a delicious drink in the process.

After days of rain, the sky over Pittsburgh cleared up for Bigelow Bash, the annual free music concert organized by the Pitt Program Council. By 1 p.m. on Sunday, the smell of fried rice, corn dogs and tacos and the bright, warm sun called students forth to the stage on Schenley Drive next to Posvar Hall. 9FiftySeven opened the event, followed by rappers My Favorite Color, Luh Tyler and headliner JID.

What you do want to miss out on is permanent eye damage because you thought it was probably fine to look at the eclipse without glasses. It’s easy to think that because it’s darker, the sun isn’t emitting as many damaging rays, and that therefore it’s safer to look at the eclipse than to look at the sun.

In 2021, the University promised a student-run community garden, Plant2Plate, one more season before development on their new land would begin. Years later, members are still waiting amid concerns over the garden’s prospective new location. Located at 246 Oakland Ave., the Plant2Plate garden provides a rare green space for students and residents alike. The garden, initially created by Pitt students in 2010 as a sustainability project, rests on an 11,600 square foot lot owned by the university.
