In The Spectator, columnist Limor Simhony Philpott comments angrily that many Western governments and organisations only criticise Israel: “No word was said about Hamas, or that their use of schools is the reason such buildings are targeted by the IDF. ... Hamas hopes that Israel will be pressured into dropping the pursuit of its members. This will allow them to continue to rule Gaza and to carry on their campaign of terrorism against Israel with the ultimate goal of annihilating it.

21 May 2024The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has requested arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant as well as three Hamas leaders. The main charges against the Israeli politicians are starvation of civilians, attacks on a civilian population, extermination and murder. The ICC accuses Hamas leaders of hostage-taking, rape, torture, extermination and murder. Israel and the US have reacted with outrage.

The radical Islamic Hamas has, in its own terms, agreed to a mediated proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the proposal fell far short of Israel's demands, but that he would send a high-ranking negotiating delegation to Egypt. For the time being he has allowed the offensive on Rafah to continue, with the Israeli army controlling parts of the city and the Palestinian side of the border crossing.
