U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has not emphasized her gender or her biracial identity during her campaign or, indeed, her career. Like other women leaders I have interviewed in the past two years and all over the world, from Denmark and Estonia to Malawi and Nigeria,she wants to be seen simply as a leader who happens to be a woman.

The outcome of India’s elections this year represent an opportunity for the world’s largest country to regain its democracy, but that outcome will depend on mobilization by Indians and an assertive opposition led by Rahul Gandhi, who campaigned on the theme of restoring democracy and protecting India’s secular constitution from attempts to propagate Hindu nationalism, or Hindutva, in India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dominant Bharatiya Janata Party.

New State Pension and other benefit payment rates that will start from April 8 this year have been published. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published the new pay rates which will see State Pensions rise by 8.5% from April this year, while many working age and disability benefit payments will go up by 6.7% which is the inflation rate as measured by the September Consumer Price Index. The proposed new rates are expected to be formally confirmed soon following parliamentary scrutiny.
