Before you despair over the lack of warm weather, use this opportunity to take part in some of Maine’s favorite winter pastimes before they’re gone for the year. When you live in Maine, snowstorms are inevitable. Yet, with each storm there seems to be a part of the population that acts as though the world is about to end.

Hundreds of people gathered in Pickering Square late Tuesday night to ring in the New Year with a ball drop from the roof of the parking garage. The ball drop, featuring a large beach ball draped in lights, is an annual tradition in downtown Bangor. This was the first time the ball was dropped from the parking garage. Last year, it was dropped off the roof of Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness. Prior to that, it was dropped from the roof of Paddy Murphy’s.

The Bangor Walmart was temporarily evacuated on Saturday. The store was reopened by 4:09 p.m., an employee at the store told the Bangor Daily News. The employee did not know the cause of the evacuation. A phone call to the Bangor Fire Department was not immediately returned.

Becky Marshall is worried about the results of Tuesday’s presidential election, regardless of who wins. If Donald Trump wins, the 63-year-old psychiatric nurse practitioner fears that the former president could withdraw the U.S. from NATO and slash federal budgets that will hurt the average American. But if Vice President Kamala Harris wins, the Democrat is afraid that Trump’s supporters might incite violence.

By Lindsay Putnam, Bangor Daily News StaffThe Bangor Daily News won the top honor of Maine’s best daily newspaper and reporter Sawyer Loftus was named the state’s journalist of the year at the Maine Press Association’s annual conference Saturday, Oct. 19 in Bar Harbor. Longtime sports reporter Larry Mahoney was also inducted into the Maine Press Association’s Hall of Fame earlier in the day.
