The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a controversial Utah railway project that critics say erodes the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a bedrock of environmental law for the past half century. The waxy crude oil is currently transported by truck over narrow mountain passes.

Two compressor stations along Transco’s natural gas pipeline in North Carolina would emit more than 935,000 tons of planet-warming greenhouse gases each year, state records show. The expansion would also contaminate nearby communities with harmful air pollutants up to 350 percent over current levels. Transco, a division of the Houston-based group Williams, plans to increase the horsepower at the existing compressor stations in Lexington, in Davidson County, and in Mooresville, in Iredell County.

The complaint was filed on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Seattle. Plaintiffs’ attorneys are asking the judge to require the Trump administration to unfreeze the funds and distribute them to the states according to a formula established by Congress.

My @insideclimate colleague Georgina Gustin wrote a national story abt EPA's recent rollback of #PFAS drinking water regs. Stay tuned for more coverage from NC ... https://t.co/5SrslwSzUu

#PFAS in sea foam off #NC coast were among the highest measured in that material anywhere. As in 1m parts per trillion. Don't touch foam in waterways, per NCSU researcher Dr. Enders, as even naturally occurring types (from leaves, algae) likely contain some contamination.
