An 89-year-old woman has been given an Unsung Hero Award for her services to roller skating in Hertfordshire. In 1985, Mary Rose Whiteley founded the St Albans Artistic Roller Skating Club (STARS). Over the last 40 years, Mary has helped to coach generations of athletes, from beginners to international champions in figure skating and solo dance. She has also made plenty of impressive outfits for many of the skaters she has taught through the last four decades.

A resident is taking on the challenge of running the London Marathon for the first time, for a cause very close to his heart. Michael Peters, son of long-term late Stanmore resident Reverend Canon Ken Peters, will take on the 26-mile run on Sunday, April 27, to raise money for the charity Anthony Nolan.

A Berkhamsted pub has been crowned Mid-Chilterns Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Cider Pub of the Year. The Rising Sun, known to many as The Riser, picked up first prize for its atmosphere, location, and impressive range of ciders. The pub has been a cornerstone of the community since the 1850s and is the last surviving ale house on the Grand Union Canal.

Herts Inclusive Theatre (HIT) were delighted to meet and support Radio 1 DJ Jamie Laing during his ultra-marathon challenge last month, as he ran through St Albans. Jamie hoped to complete five ultra-marathons in five days to raise money for Comic Relief. On Monday, March 17, HIT staff and members set up at The Ancient Briton Harvester on Harpenden Road, and welcomed Jamie with costumes, props and a variety of musical instruments.

Tributes have been paid to a much-loved member of the community, Marc Reingold, who passed away on Friday, March 21. Angus Fraser, chair of Stanmore Cricket Club (CC), shared: “Marc lost his battle with cancer surrounded by his wonderful family. He was 55 years of age. His presence on Stanmore Common will be missed enormously but his contribution to the wellbeing and name of Stanmore CC will never be forgotten.
