It is said that, on the way from New York, weather fronts often make a stop in Toronto. Alas, that’s far less common for international orchestras, so it was no surprise to see a near-capacity turnout for the revered Czech Philharmonic and their Music Director, Semyon Bychkov, in the first of two concerts in Koerner Hall.

Not as universally beloved as his Cello Concerto nor as rarely performed as its piano counterpart, Dvořák’s Violin Concerto in A minor took center stage in this second Czech Philharmonic performance at Carnegie Hall this month under the baton of Semyon Bychkov. These concerts, dedicated to Dvořák’s most important works for soloist and orchestra, were part of New York’s contribution to theYear of Czech Music, a global celebration honouring the rich legacy of Czech composers and their creations.

Teet Kask is forging a path for himself in two arenas of the ballet world: as a respected choreographer he has made ballets that are notable for their individuality and variety, and as a teacher he is the creative director of the Estonian National Ballet School in Tallinn. Nos llegan la angustia y el desamor al Teatro Real de la mano de dos obras maestras del repertorio operístico, La Voix humaine y Erwartung. How to have something new to say in one of the most celebrated operas of all time? This was the challenge facing director Orpha Phelan in Irish National Opera's new production of La bohème. By setting the opera in Paris in the 1920s, assembling a stellar cast of singers and with no little help from the realistic sets, costumes and the super-responsive orchestra, she succeeded in creating an emotionally-charged, masterful production of this classic tear-jerker.

The Maida Vale Studios aren’t the most prepossessing of venues – a maze of low ceilings and nylon carpets, haunted by the clatter of teacups plus a background hum of decades of orchestral gossip. But as the rehearsal home of the BBC Symphony Orchestra they witness great music-making on an almost daily basis. Memories are certainly being made today, as Semyon Bychkov rehearses Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony for tomorrow night’s Prom.
