    Public health officials visited pools in Altadena Tuesday as the standing water at the abandoned or destroyed homes after the Eaton Fire could pose a major mosquito problem for the community and nearby neighborhoods. As NBC Los Angeles joined technicians from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District as they tried to stop mosquitoes from reproducing in the abandoned pools, they found mosquito larva already forming in some of the pools.

    Since the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena in January, not a single building permit for an impacted homeowner was finalized even though more than 1,500 properties are ready for rebuilding, a Los Angeles County official said Monday. As LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and City Councilmember Traci Park toured the Altadena area Monday, they acknowledged that restoring the once vibrant neighborhoods has met roadblocks and significant delays.

    Despite continued cleanup work in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades to remove debris in the aftermath of the January wildfires, many families have not been able to return home largely due to carcinogens and other harmful toxins inside their properties as well as their neighborhoods. More than 50 homes in the Altadena area torched by the Eaton Fire were estimated to have contaminants like lead and asbestos, according to a neighborhood group called Eaton Fire Residents United.
