To the Editor A recent Viewpoint1 addressed the importance of protecting the sacredness of health in the context of the conflict in Israel and Gaza. While we share the authors’ commitment to protecting the inviolability of health in conflict zones, we are concerned about their interpretation and application of international humanitarian law (IHL) in this armed conflict. In our opinion, the authors’ “objective law-based assessment”1 was misleading.

In Reply Letters by Dr Adler and colleagues, Dr Sheinfeld Gorin, Mr Kels, and Dr Richter and colleagues in response to our recent Viewpoint1 raise 3 central issues: our limited attention to Hamas’ actions, including on October 7; our strong suggestion that Israeli strikes have, in at least some cases, amounted to war crimes; and a proposed path forward.
