According to the MCFL, library patrons recently surpassed one million digital checkouts over the app Libby, which gives library card holders free access to 100,000 eBooks, audiobooks, comics and other titles on their smartphones, computers and digital readers.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Use of force by deputies and correctional officers continued to decline last year in San Mateo County, marking three consecutive years of the downward trend, according to the sheriff's office. Data released this week by Sheriff Christina Corpus showed 71 use-of-force incidents in 2024, down from 107 in 2023, 127 in 2022 and 137 in 2021. The sheriff's office classifies incidents by the level of force used, from "empty hand control" to "less than lethal" and "lethal" force.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Bay Area is in for a stretch of calmer, cooler weather on the heels of an atmospheric river that poured over the region Thursday. Preliminary totals from the National Weather Service showed more than an inch of precipitation recorded over 24 hours around San Rafael, Redwood City, Oakland and the Sonoma County Airport. Now, forecasters are tracking a cold air mass expected to settle over the region this weekend.

SAN MATEO, CA — Police are searching for witnesses and camera footage that could help identify the driver responsible for hitting and killing a man Saturday night in San Mateo. According to the police department, a 56-year-old man was near the 1400 block of Fashion Island Boulevard, approaching the bridge towards South Norfolk Street, when he was hit and killed by an unknown vehicle and driver who fled the scene.
