    Residents fed up with our poorly maintained roads have voiced their frustrations about vehicle-wrecking potholes causing endless misery. Boksburg Advertiser visited some of the most affected stretches of roads in Boksburg and spoke to residents and businesses. They said the road defects are damaging their vehicles and the metro is ignoring their complaints, failing to take the necessary steps to combat the pothole epidemic in the city.

    Health workers, experts and various stakeholders gathered at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg for a workshop on January 25, aimed at combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Gauteng. Themed ‘Unite. Act. Eliminate NTDs’, the event focused on addressing diseases such as schistosomiasis, rabies and leprosy, which disproportionately affect vulnerable communities in informal settlements and rural areas.

    Hoërskool OosterligHoërskool Oosterlig’s Class of 2024 achieved a 98.5% pass rate, increasing from last year’s 95.42%. A total of 201 matriculants at the school sat for their National Senior Certificate exams, and the school flew high with 222 distinctions. Some 76.7% of learners passed with bachelor’s passes, while 17.4% attained diploma passes. “This is an improvement from 2023, but we are still striving for a 100% pass rate.

    Dawn Park Primary School has completed renovations on three classrooms that were destroyed in a fire on August 13, 2024, providing much-needed relief to 250 Grade Six learners who were left without proper facilities for months. The fire broke out around 02:00, reportedly starting at the school’s tuckshop before quickly spreading to the classrooms and a kitchen used for the feeding scheme. In the aftermath, the Gauteng Department of Education initially promised to rebuild the affected classrooms.

    Yet again, the people of Reiger Park have demonstrated the incredible impact of a community united in purpose. In the days leading up to schools reopening, the residents came together to offer free washes and haircuts to the area’s vulnerable children on January 13 and 14. Munnera Abdullah, who is involved in the initiative, said it was not just about grooming. They also wanted to alleviate parents’ financial strain and ensure children started the school year confidently and feeling cared for.
