The federal government has decided its $240 million in contributions to Hobart's Macquarie Point stadium and precinct will be exempt from GST calculations after all. The decision ends a months-long war of words between the state and federal governments and means the federal money will be additional funding for the state rather than it negatively impacting the state's GST share. Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers had earlier said the project would not be granted an exemption.

Outgoing Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has granted permanent residency to student Devarshi Deka, who was left a paraplegic after an alleged assault in Hobart last year. The upgraded visa status means Mr Deka will not have to return to India, and can access support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Mr Deka's alleged attacker, Benjamin Dodge Collings, is expected to reappear in court later this month.

SunCable, an Australian renewable energy company has named Tasmania as it's preferred site for an advanced cable manufacturing facility. Billionaire, Mike Cannon-Brookes is behind SunCable which hopes to build a massive solar farm in the Northern Territory, with much of the energy being sent to Singapore via undersea cable. The cable plant proposed for Tasmania includes a 180-200 metre high tower. It's perhaps best known for the bidding war it created between two of Australia's richest men.
