Tasmanian hospitality giant Federal Group says Macquarie Point is not the right location for the proposed AFL stadium. The group owns two hotels in the precinct and the Wrest Point casino in the nearby Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay. As the red wave swept Tasmania on election night, it wasn't just the federal Labor Party that was celebrating the "extraordinary" result. Closely watching as the votes flowed in, sometimes side by side with the federal candidates, were members of the party's state team, experiencing by proxy something that they haven't for a long time — victory. There was shock on the ABC election panel when the results started coming in. "Remarkable" and "extraordinary" were some of the words used to describe what was happening in Tasmania on election night. It was something no-one saw coming — not the Liberals who thought they would defend their own seats and maybe, just maybe, pick up one, and not even Labor dared dream it would go this well. But when the music stopped, the Liberals were left without a single seat and a lot of questions to answer.

Northern Tasmania has dramatically swung to Labor in a surprise result that pushed out a well-liked local MP and turned a safe Liberal seat red. It means the federal Liberals won't hold a single one of the state's five lower house seats. Bass, which takes in Launceston and the state's north-east, and Braddon, which takes in the state's north-west and west coast were won by the Liberals in 2019. When the country voted in the Labor Party in 2022, voters in those seats stuck with the Liberals.

As the smallest state, Tasmania only has five seats in the House of Representatives. And experts say one of those, the Hobart-based seat of Clark, is likely to be won easily by independent Andrew Wilkie. Leaving four in play to varying degrees.
