On Friday, MPs will vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill – a once-in-a-generation vote on whether those with terminal illnesses should have the right to an assisted death. The right, in other words, to end one’s own life with the help of medical professionals. As the Guardian’s deputy political editor Jessica Elgot explains, it would be a monumental social change, and has been compared to previous reforms on abortion, the death penalty and equal marriage.

Thoughts of ending your life are a common response to human suffering. Yet with care and support, they can usually be overcome. That’s why our usual reaction to someone wanting to end their life is to try to prevent suicide – including showing them we value their life at a time when they’re struggling to do so themselves.

1. Introduction Cervical artery dissection (CAD) is one of the major causes of stroke in young and middle-aged adults, often caused by neck distortion, chiropractic manipulation, and trauma (1–3). Patients with CAD can have a wide range of symptoms, varying from completely asymptomatic to a fatal stroke. Typically, CADs present symptoms such as headache or neck pain and a partial Horner's syndrome, followed by retinal or cerebral ischemia (4–6).
