Del Mar City Council members will continue discussing potential city regulations for bicycles and e-bikes during their June 2 meeting. Council members approved a first reading of an ordinance in April, but also indicated that they wanted to consider stricter regulations to prevent riding on sidewalks. If the ordinance is modified to include stricter sidewalk rules, it will require the council to vote on another first reading and then a second reading a month later.

Border Patrol issued a search warrant May 16 for multiple cell phones belonging to smugglers and migrants aboard the panga boat that capsized in Del Mar earlier this month, leaving three confirmed dead. The deceased included two Mexican nationals, whose details have not been released, and a 14-year-old Indian national, whose 10-year-old sister is missing and presumed dead, according to the warrant. The Coast Guard conducted a search with Customs and Border Protection, but did not find her.

The city of Del Mar sent a cease and desist letter to Councilmember Dan Quirk over “harassing, derogatory, and otherwise inappropriate remarks” about the city manager and city staff. The city’s independent counsel sent the letter April 28 following a 2-0 closed session vote the week prior by councilmembers Tracy Martinez and John Spelich, with Mayor Terry Gaasterland abstaining. The city attorney announced May 19 that the letter had been sent.

The Del Mar City Council approved an updated set of local regulations May 19 for how to incorporate SB 9, a state law that allows up to four residential units on parcels zoned for single-family housing. The regulations are now pending a second reading next month and approval by the California Coastal Commission, expected in July. “This will check off an important program in our housing element as a strategy to achieve low-income units,” Del Mar Principal Planner Amanda Lee said during the meeting.
