    A community has come together to offer shelter, support and fundraising for those affected by a fatal town centre fire over the weekend. One man died in the blaze which ripped through a flat in Kirkby Lonsdale's Main Street at 05:45 GMT on Sunday. He has been named locally as Ben Taylor, a 45-year-old business owner and member of the Cumbrian town's rugby club. A second man suffered minor injuries, while a number of other people are unable to return to their homes.

    A schoolboy said he has been left "speechless and shocked" after being crowned Britain's top young strongman, despite only taking up the sport 10 weeks earlier. Fifteen-year-old Keenan Pearson defeated rivals two years older than him to be crowned British Under-17 Strongman Champion. He won the title at in Preston, Lancashire, on Sunday despite going into the event "fearing" he would finish last.

    A Grade II listed church set in the heart of a conservation area has fallen into such a state of disrepair that it has been labelled "an eyesore" for the whole area. The owner of St Aidan's Church in Blackhill, near Consett, County Durham, has been fined £10,000 for failing to carry out essential repairs on the building. Magistrates in Peterlee heard how the local landmark is no longer wind or watertight and has a negative impact on the surrounding area.

    A refurbishment of bridges on a section of a major motorway network has been announced. National Highways has unveiled plans to replace eight bridge deck structures along a six-mile (10k) stretch of the M6 between junctions 37 and 38 through Lune Gorge near Tebay, in Cumbria. Seven of the bridges carry the motorway between the Howgill Fells and the eighth supports the A685 road over the M6 near Roundthwaite village.
