Another Med Port Banning Cruise Ships this Summer

Small ship cruising has many benefits, but increasingly, mere access – even to bigger ports – is available only to guests on smaller ships. The latest domino to fall is the popular French Mediterranean port of Nice. According to local Riviera news reports on January 21, 2025, the mayor of Nice is banning the docking of ships over 900 guests. Some reports indicated all cruise ships would be banned but Riviera Radio is reporting the ban applies to large ships only.

Despite promises from Ottawa and a ballooning budget from the feds, the backlog of air pax complaints to the Canadian Transportation Agency hasn't decreased. In fact, it's reached a new record. Published reports say there are now more than 71,000 complaints on file with the CTA, the most there's ever been. “Wow. It’s really become a crisis,” John Lawford, executive director of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, told the Toronto Star.

Air Canada has paused proposed changes to its seat selection policy for economy class customers who wait to select a seat at check-in. Air Canada had announced that, as of this week, pax who book either Economy (Basic) or Economy (Standard) fares and haven’t paid to select a seat online, will be assigned a seat at check-in. If they wish to move to a seat of their own choice, the standard fee paid for seat selection would apply.
