Just like that, St. Louis City SC gave itself a fresh start, a new beginning. The club snapped the winless streak and let a ray of sunshine break through the cloud that hung over the club for more than two months. More than that, City SC seemed more capable of taking its season back than it has in weeks. Well, as much as it can in just one match. It still counts as one win. There are no multipliers that give the victory more weight in the standings.

Jordan Walker made the jump to the majors from Double-A and slid right into the Opening Day lineup at Busch Stadium in 2023. Now, more than two years later, it truly feels like the Cardinals have finally created a dynamic that gives Walker the best chance of big-league success. That goes beyond the influence of a new hitting coach and the club’s commitment to consistent playing time. Those elements remain key, but just pointing to two things would stop short of the full picture.

A new coach, a new podcast episode St. Louis City SC City president and general manager Diego Gigliani and sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel walked into the news conference room at Energizer Park on Thursday expecting daggers aimed at them. After all, they'd fired a second coach in less than one year and have now turned the club over to the fourth coach, including those with “interim” and “caretaker” designations, in just their third season playing in MLS.
