Many Bay Area cities are known for their dining scenes, but San Francisco has long been the culinary nucleus of the region. Whether you seek a blowout fine dining dinner or a mind-meltingly good burrito, the city is a giving place for food obsessives. So where should you go to experience the best of what the city has to offer? We’ve put together an eclectic mix that we feel captures the dynamism of San Francisco restaurants — and its diversity.

When my editor asked me to select the quietest restaurant on our list of the Top 100 restaurants in the Bay Area, all I could think about was the sharp rap of porcelain against marble. Sons & Daughters, which I reviewed last fall, is an intimate establishment, a series of small rooms that seat no more than a handful of people at a time. I pitched this story, half-jokingly, in an attempt to get ahead of what readers will say we missed on our list of the Top 100 restaurants in the Bay Area. “How many more minutes, Daddy?” asked the child, who was literally climbing the walls outside Jagalchi. She and her family were waiting in line to enter the new, 75,000-square-foot Korean food complex in Daly City, as were my colleague Cesar Hernandez and I. You, too, will almost certainly wait in line — to pass through the doors, to procure baked goods or snacks or beverages at various kiosks and eateries throughout the compound, to pay for your groceries.
