This is part of a series on San Francisco’s small businesses. Few stores have been more impacted by online shopping than boutique dress shops and that is clear at the legacy business Ambiance, known by its black-and-white awning and stores jammed with well-dressed mannequins. The original store at 1458 Haight St. opened in 1983, and the second owners duplicated it in Noe Valley, Cow Hollow, the Sunset and on Union Street.

This is part of a series on small businesses in San Francisco. In the age of Amazon and ebooks, it’s the rare brick-and-mortar bookstore that has made it into its sixth decade. Then there’s Green Apple Books, a store that began as a 750-square-foot space at 506 Clement St. and has now doubled in width, added a mezzanine for children’s books and second floor, and opened two new outlets: Green Apple Books in the Park in Lower Sunset, opened in 2014, and Browser Books in Fillmore, bought in 2019.

When other fabric stores shut down, San Franciscans in need of sewing materials turned to Fabrix. At least, that’s what Fabrix store owner Keelin Reddy believes has spurred her recent bump in sales. Fabrix’s experience indicates that being small and planted in one neighborhood can be an advantage. What’s more, e-commerce hasn’t made the inroads in fabric that it has in so many other businesses.
