More than a century after Howard Carter delivered the most sensational discovery in the long history of Egyptology, Piers Litherland was searching cliff faces south of the Valley of the Kings when he chanced upon a tomb unlike dozens of others he had excavated. Litherland had led a British expedition to search parts of Luxor away from where Tutankhamun was found in 1922, in the hope of learning more about the 18th ancient Egyptian dynasty of all-powerful pharaohs.

The search for a British couple who went missing after a diving yacht capsized in the Red Sea last week has been called off, The Times understands. Jenny Cawson, 36, and her husband Tarig Sinada, 49, are among seven people still unaccounted for after the Sea Story went down off the east coast of Egypt in the early hours of November 25.

Just after lunch last Sunday, passengers of the diving yacht Sea Story squeezed into their wetsuits and plunged into the warm waters of Marsa Shouna. British, Belgian, Swiss and German tourists were among those seen swimming in the bay, just off Egypt’s eastern coast, which is famous for the rays and turtles that roam its reefs. The popular diving spot was supposed to be the first of many underwater locations they explored after setting sail on a six-day voyage across the Red Sea.

The two Britons rescued from a diving yacht that capsized in the Red Sea are seasoned sailors who have spent their retirement voyaging around the world while crewing on private boats, a friend has said. Colin Sharratt, 65, a former project manager from London, and Sally Jones, 58, a former consultant, were rescued alongside 26 other passengers and crew of the tourist boat, Sea Story, on Monday morning.

Hopes of finding the passengers alive were fading on Monday evening as darkness fell and rescue teams called off their extensive search operation for the night.
