The signage affixed to the Houston Public Library branch at 4100 Montrose Blvd. is very clear. “This library and book drop are closed” says one; “Closed effective November 14, 2024.” Also clear: A clause buried within the deed through which the library was donated to the city, which states that if the property ceases to be used as a public library for more than 30 days before the year 2051, its ownership would revert to neighboring University of St. Thomas. November 14 was more than 150 days ago.

Whether the tree is large or small is in the eye of the beholder. For most of the dozen or so folks scattered around the patch of mulch where the Red Maple sapling is being stuffed into the ground, it looks small – skinny-armed and loosely-leafed. But to 9-year-old Aria Momin, who has to lift her chin to see its tippy top above her head, it’s big. In size, and in meaning.

There was something about the bookstore down the block from Andrea Sifuentes’ apartment. It felt, she says, like walking into an episode of Gilmore Girls – a quintessentially quaint experience. When Joanna Nathan brought her 6-month-old daughter to her pediatrician check-up this month, she came armed with a burning question: How worried should she be about the measles, given that her daughter is too young to be vaccinated? “I’m nervous,” she told the doctor. “Can we accelerate the shot?”It’s a question being posed to doctors across the area as the once-erradicated disease flourishes in other parts of the state, and three cases have now been reported in Harris County.

What a great way to celebrate National Wattle Day – 1st September 2024 – A beautiful poem. There is a land of green & goldWhere time begins as dreams unfold,A land across the oceans farBeneath a Cross of Southern Stars! There in the glow of wattle brightA silvery dawn brings morning light,As sunshine drapes golden sheenOver hills & dale of mottled green.

Today was my due date for a baby I'll never get to meet. Even though about 20 percent of pregnancies result in a miscarriage, we so rarely talk about it. And for me, that expectation of silence last September made it all so much harder.
