Patient and caregiver engagement is a core component of high-quality healthcare systems. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed to us the fragility of patient and family engagement that was not as firmly rooted in the health system as expected. In this paper, we reflect on case examples from healthcare organizations across Canada where pivots and adaptations were made to patient engagement activities. We share core enablers of engagement in times of high system stress, drawing on illustrative examples.

I am exceptionally grateful for the outstanding speakers who shared their knowledge and wisdom with us at CAHSPR 2023. In the session “Protecting Truth and Science in an Age of Misinformation” we had a dynamite panel with Dr. Steini Brown, Dr. Jillian Horton and Dr. Peter Hotez, who delved into this subject and left us with much to ponder, which I have been doing. I have just finished reading the new book, written by Dr. Hotez, The Deadly Rise of Anti-Science (widely available now in Canada).

I want a primary-care provider with whom I can build a long-term relationship and who understands my health-care needs. That’s the message that comes through loud and clear from an online survey of more than 9,000 Canadian adults last September/October as part of the OurCare initiative to engage the public on the future of primary care. People were asked to think about their past experiences with the health-care system and what they value.
